WHAT IS CHELATION?

Chelation is a chemical substance that is used to bind molecules, such as metals or minerals and hold them so they can be removed from the body. The most common form is a man-made amino acid called EDTA. The word chelate literally means “claw”. EDTA acts as a “claw” to grab, trap, and excrete potentially harmful substances, such as heavy metals. As these toxins are removed, it allows the body to function properly. Chelation usually results in lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and a general sense of improved energy and improved well-being.

WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM CHELATION THERAPY?

People with heart disease typically respond really well to chelation as it helps to improve circulation and improves arteriosclerosis (hardening and plaquing of the arteries). It is also good for people with diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. Because many chronic diseases are caused or exacerbated by an increased toxic load on our bodies, chelation is helpful for managing many different symptoms.

WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE CHELATION?

EDTA Chelation is very safe. People with high blood pressure and diabetes should monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar closely when starting chelation. Because chelation can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, medications for these conditions may need to be adjusted by the physician. Please notify Dr. Singer or the IV nurse if your blood pressure and blood sugar changes so that we can work with you to adjust these as needed. Chelation works by flushing toxins out through the kidneys, so people with kidney disease should be monitored closely as well.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF CHELATION?

Lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar are common side effects of chelation therapy. As with any chemical, these is a chance of an allergic reaction, although this is rare. Kidney damage is possible, but this is also rare and blood tests will be done frequently throughout your treatment to ensure that your kidneys are still functioning properly. Some people experience headaches, nausea, and fatigue as well.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Chelation can deplete your body of important minerals during the detoxification process. In order to make sure that your minerals are not being depleted, every 10th IV, you will receive a 30 minute remineralization IV in place of your chelation that day.

We will be checking your kidney function through a blood test at the beginning of your chelation treatment and then every 10th IV thereafter to make sure that your kidneys are still functioning properly.

Chelation therapy lasts either 1 and 1/2 hours or 3 hours, depending on if you are receiving a half or full bag of chelation. Please plan on being here for the appropriate amount of time.
